An interactive art show that explores how assumptions we place on others reflect ourselves more than those we judge.
An exploration of self
In our fast-paced world, we frequently find ourselves making rapid assessments of individuals based solely on fleeting glimpses and superficial observations. These assumptions aren't formed in isolation; they emerge from our personal experiences, cultural conditioning, and accumulated biases. Perhaps most tellingly, the snap judgments we make about others often reflect our own preconceptions more than the true essence of those we observe.
What shifts in our perceptions when we're denied these visual cues? How does this transform our way of seeing and understanding? And in that moment of altered perspective, what do we learn about our own tendency to make assumptions—about others, and ultimately, about ourselves?
Become part of the show
Upon arrival each attendee is provided a Post-It note and a marker, inviting them to become an active participant in the exhibition's narrative-building process. Visitors are encouraged to observe each portrait carefully and write down initial impressions, imagined stories, and projected assumptions about the individuals depicted. These written reflections can then be thoughtfully placed around the corresponding portrait, creating an evolving tapestry of collective imagination.
As the notes accumulate throughout the event, they form a fascinating visual representation of how we construct stories about strangers—people whose true lives and experiences remain unknown to us, yet whom we instinctively try to understand through our own personal lens.
i do this for my people
ABOUT FACE benefits many by bringing people together, getting them out of the house, off of screens to engage with people through social interaction. It creates an opportunity to gather the community to experience an art show designed to make the guests the true focus of the show. Being an introspective activity it leads to open discussions of what they observe with fellow attendees.
Children are a huge part of our community and ABOUT FACE is a a family friendly experience and are encouraged to observe and participate. As long as they can write clearly on a note pad. The core of the show is observation and sharing what you see with others. As we all know, children are the best at being unfiltered and saying exactly what’s on their minds.
The best part of ABOUT FACE is how it challenges guests to wrestle with their own biases and explore where they stem from. Is it nature or nurture? Did you gain this view point from a friend or through an experience at school or church? ABOUT FACE is a great place to start exploring deeper aspects of your personality when you ask the simple questions: “why do i feel like that?”
