Create-A-Pope was the by product of curiosity, silliness and a personal challenge. I’ve been teaching myself After Effects for the last year or so. Very slowly. To be honest I haven’t been very diligent in my studies and recently I’ve challenged myself to do better. I always preach “Great skill comes with tons of practice…” or something like that.
After creating this self-portrait, I began to wonder what I would look like with various hairstyles and beards. Once that idea was implanted it was like Inception and I couldn’t get the idea out of my head. 18 hairstyle illustrations later the Create-a-Pope project was born.
Before finishing this video I watched this video by James Curran & Adobe Effects where he said something very interesting to me. He said and I’m paraphrasing “If you’re learning animation you should create really short animations to perfect the technique then post for feedback. If you take 2 months to create a short you’ll probably get the same amount of feedback.”
That was super eye opening for me. Not only would you learn more but you’ll have more animations completed and done under your belt than doing one long short. Look out for shorter videos from me in the future.
